About the Choir
The Phoenix Singers is an auditioned chamber choir of 40-50 voices based in the lovely town of Shrewsbury, England. The choir was founded in 1965 and is 'one of the pre-eminent musical organisations in Shropshire'.
Our repertoire encompasses a wide variety of music, including unaccompanied Renaissance motets and madrigals, major works from the Baroque and Classical periods, smaller-scale pieces from the 19th century, and a significant amount of music from the 20th and 21st centuries.

Join us
We are always looking for experienced choral singers to join the choir. All voices are welcome, but especially sopranos and basses at present.
The choir's repertoire is eclectic and challenging, so you need to be able to read music reasonably fluently, and either be able to sight-read or be willing to learn the music between rehearsals.

Previous Concerts
The Phoenix Singers perform three or four times each year, and aim to achieve a balance of music from different periods from Renaissance to 21st century music, from different countries, and both sacred and secular. In recent years, familiar choral works such as Handel's Messiah, Fauré's Requiem and Allegri's Miserere, have been performed alongside less well-known music, such as Carl Rütti's Requiem, Will Todd's Christus est stella, and Rudolph Mauersberger's Wie liegt die Stadt so wüst.

Future concerts
Our 2024-25 season is already underway, with a lunchtime concert at Shrewsbury Abbey in September. Our November concert (see above) will be followed by traditional Christmas concerts in Bicton and St Alkmund's, telling the story of the Nativity across six centuries of music.
Then, in March, we shall perform musical settings of the Song of Songs, ranging from Palestrina to David Bednall; whilst June will see us in a lighter mood with English madrigals and partsongs alongside music by Ēriks Ešenvalds and Morten Lauridsen.
Support us
The Phoenix Singers receive no public subsidy, and so we are reliant on our audiences to support our aim of performing a wide range of high quality choral music in and around Shrewsbury.
If you have enjoyed our concerts, please consider supporting us further by making a one-off donation, or sponsoring a specific concert.
